Saga of Westmarch Wiki
Saga of Westmarch Wiki

Narrator: The delvers are in the darkness of the Shrouded Valley, overlooking the castle from a goblin village on the slopes. Below them, a group of goblins stands in waiting, and additional greenskins march up from the central castle.
GM: The wall is about 300 yards north of you, and the nearest tower is about 500 yards east along the wall. The wolf archers are milling around at the edge of bow range.
GM: You (for values of "you" meaning Connell) can see into the future, as greenskins form up in the castle region and start marching up slope.
GM: There is a large mass (80+) of goblins and ogres about 10 minutes away, a smaller bunch about 300 yards away, and several even larger groups near the castle or moving out from it.
GM: For example, a mass of at least 100 greenskins is marching up a parallel road, heading for the tower.
Ayake: "Well, I have faced worse odds."
Ayake: "I can't quite remember when, but I'm sure I have."
GM: You've had time to look around, and there are some wooded areas - at least a few dozen acres - past the castle.
GM: If you could get to them, you might be able to take cover in them and lie low for a bit.
GM: Maybe.
Connell: "Are we really going to fight an entire army on an open field?"
Berkun: "I never faced worse odds. But there's first time for everything..."
Mrugnak: "It just goblin."
Berkun: Berkun mutters, then spits in his hands
Mrugnak: "n puppies."
Mrugnak: "n ogres."
Berkun: "If they surround us, we're done for"
Mrugnak: "n more goblins."
Berkun: "At this point, even a hole in the ground would be useful"
Ted: "We have some cover in the village, we could go for a tower but we'd have to take it"
Ayake: "We have adequate cover here."
Berkun: "Let's do it."
Ted: "I could make us a crude wall"
Berkun: "It gives us a chance. It might be hard, but if we do it, then the next fight will only be just as hard and not... suicide"
Berkun: "Can you make us a hole in the tower to go through?"
Ted: yes, but it would be very hard and tap most of my energy
** Connell looks up at the tower. Does it have a wooden door? **
Ted: "It would be easier to move the dirt here, and use part of these buildings"
GM: The tower has multiple doors, probably wooden or reinforced wooden.
Ted: have the goblins sent a group to the gate yet?
GM: They're sending a group to the gate, but it hasn't made it there... other than some wolf archers.
** Ayake nods. "We make our stand here. Do what you need to, Richard." **
Berkun: "I... don't know what you can do, Ted"
Connell: "I can probably just walk through those doors... don't know if that helps."
Berkun: "But if we face them in the open, we're done for"
Berkun: "But yes, if we stand any hope of storming the tower, let's do so now!"
Richard: "I can shape the earth into mounds, stone into walls"
Berkun: "That can save us too"
** Richard looks over the village for the sturdiest building **
Berkun: "Those wolves are determined, though. You'll need high walls"
GM: Make an Architecture roll?
Mrugnak: "Ogres tall too."
Richard: IQ-5 the default?
GM: Yes.
Berkun: "Yes. And they can smash through lesses obstacles..."
Berkun: "Ted, do your best..."
Richard: [3d6.skill(15,-5)] => [4,1,6] = 11 vs (10) or less Failure! by 1
GM: The small building in the middle of the 3 on the south is made of stone with a partial slate roof. It looks pretty strong to you.
Richard: would you class the ground south of it as dirt or stone for the spell?
GM: Dirt.
GM: As long as you don't go very deep.
GM: ...
GM: what are you guys doing?
** Mrugnak is farting around with his weapons, waiting for someone to get close enough to bother charging them. **
Mrugnak: Or to need to duck.
** Ayake is meditating until they decide how the defenses will be set up. **
** Connell is fretting. **
Ayake: ((For what it's worth, I don't have the slightest problem with 'wade in and kill them all'.))
Berkun: Berkun is just looking through the buildings, searching for a possibility to set a trap... is any of the buildings in a state that it could collapse easily?
Richard: I'm going to try a 4 hex shape earth on the dirt south of the building to try and make as close to a wall as I can without needing to maintain the spell
GM: Berkun - these are goblin hovels. You're amazed they stay up at all, and some are partially collapsed.
GM: How long are you taking to cast the spell?
Richard: loud, lots of gestures, extra time -4FP [3d6.skill(19,+4-10)] => [2,6,2] = 10 vs (13) or less Success! by 3
Richard: 2 sec
GM: 2 seconds doesn't give a skill bonus on non-combat spells or outside of emergency situations.
Richard: oh, 10 sec then
GM: Right.
Connell: I might as well do some casting. Turning into a Wooden Tiger again. -2 FP, shouting and waving, extra time. [3d6.skill(16,0)] => [6,5,4] = 15 vs (16) or less Success! by 1
Connell: That'll be a fail.
Connell: (( ... or, uh - -5 for FP, +3 for shouting, +1 for extra time... so success by 0? ))
GM: Right.
GM: Richard, the wall is up.
Connell: (( Sorry, got bounced out of the computer room so wife could work, lacking many notes. ))
GM: You think it will hold... it's about 2 yards tall, just a rough berm.
Richard: ok, I let the spell go and see if it crushes the house on that side or if it collapes
GM: Actually, move earth is a regular spell, not area... let me fix that.
GM: And it's only 1 yard tall.
Richard: eh?
Richard: I grab 4 cuft and move it, I can stack it high
GM: I made the wall too big.
Richard: unless I don't think it'll stay there
Richard: I want it to touch the house, I'm testing it's strength as well
GM: Draw what you're doing on the map, please.
GM: You have 4 hexes of wall and 4 hexes of trench to play with.
Richard: hmm
Berkun: do the buildings have windows or such?
Berkun: basically, is there more than one entry point?
Berkun: (?)
Berkun: (okay, it's working)
GM: The buildings have pretty thin walls, some have multiple doors, and generally hide or thatch roofs.
GM: So there isn't technically more than 1 entry point -- unless you put your fist through the wall.
GM: ... everyone could do it.
Richard: wait, I could kick through the stone wall?
GM: No... that one looks secure.
GM: Most of the others, not so much.
GM: You think.
Richard: heh
Richard: OK, do that twice more
GM: Draw it, roll it.
Richard: loud, lots of gestures, extra time -4FP [3d6.skill(19,+4-10)] => [1,1,1] = 3 vs (13) or less Critical Success! [B556]
Berkun: so, the southernmost hovel, where does it have doors and windows?
GM: You only need to do it once!
GM: It has one door.
GM: On the north wall.
Berkun: and windows?
Berkun: on all sides?
Berkun: are they large enough for Berkun to fit through?
GM: There's two high ones on each of the north and south side, each about 30 cm square.
Richard: "Any movement from the gobbos?"
GM: The near group is staying still.
GM: The other groups are marching.
Mrugnak: Mrugnak can give you a boost. :D
GM: Still many minutes away.
GM: Note that the building is only about 8' tall at the peak.
GM: ...
GM: and now what?
Ayake: ((Hey, Berkun.))
Mrugnak: So not much of a boost then.
Richard: I make a doorway in the south wall
Mrugnak: We could put Berkun ON the roof?
Ayake: ((The near goblins are at 280-290 yards. That's a -13 shot. What's your bow skill+acc? >.>))
GM: How are you making a doorway in the south wall? Shape Stone or whatever.
Richard: loud, lots of gestures, extra time -3FP [3d6.skill(19,+4-8)] => [3,1,4] = 8 vs (15) or less Success! by 7
Berkun: I have this idea - lure goblins into a house and collapse it...
Richard: shape earth, works on worked stone for 3x
GM: How much fatigue did you just spend? 6 points?
GM: err. 3?
Richard: how thick is the wall?
Berkun: (skill 20 + 3 acc +2 from the bow +1 from bless)
** Connell is a tiger. He sits and waits. **
Richard: I think 1 cuyd would cover a door
Richard: cuyd
GM: Eh.
GM: By the way, there's a -5 penalty for darkness.
Richard: 1x2x.5
GM: It's x6 (sextuple) for worked stone, so 6FP.
Berkun: "We need light here... a fire"
GM: Oh, you guys have some light (I think)
Berkun: "Maybe more than one, so to scare the wolves"
Ayake: I have a glow rod!
GM: it's just the goblins, 300+ yards away, are in darkness.
Ayake: Yeah, it's an 8- shot.
Richard: doh, thought it was 3x, I'd have gone for -4FP and paid 2 then
Richard: want a reroll?
GM: No, I'm fine with what you rolled.
Richard: "OK guys, we can get in through the door through the hut now, any suggestions?"
Ayake: "We need to get them moving towards us."
Ayake: "If we let them all get together, we could be in trouble."
Richard: "well, Mrugnak will be tight"
Berkun: "Whistling arrow?"
Berkun: Berkun readies a humming bulb arrow from his quiver
Ayake: "Can you drop those exploding things you were doing behind their lines, maybe start them moving?"
Berkun: "It certainly will draw them here, if this is what we really want...!"
Ayake: "We don't want them coming here when they're *all* together."
Richard: "as far as I can shoot, so barely"
** Mrugnak peers dubiously at the doorway **
Berkun: "Right..."
Berkun: "Ready when you tell me. The whistle might get them to investigate..."
GM: I don't think Mrugnak can fit in the building without crouching.
Ayake: "They know we're here, Berkun."
GM: The goblins didn't build it for Mountain Minotaurs or Ogres.
Mrugnak: Fabulous. Minotaur duckwalk.
Richard: (( I assumed he'd want to fight outside :) ))
Mrugnak: (( oh sure. Everyone go and hide in the foxhole. Except Mrugnak. You go stand outside and distract them :D ))
Berkun: Berkun nods and takes a barbed arrow
Ayake: "Richard? Whenever you're ready, see if you can encourage them to start moving."
Ayake: ((I fight outside.))
Berkun: "Then I might just consider to try and make a shot...!"
Richard: they're at the near end of 300 yards now?
Berkun: Berkun starts aiming at whatever he can see
GM: They're about 300 yards away. They're on the map, guys.
** Richard draws an arrow and loads it **
Ayake: I see them there! That's how I got the 290 yard range. :P
GM: Alright, what are you doing?
Berkun: aiming for an ogre
GM: Okay.
Richard: 6d explode shouting, extra time, -3 FP [3d6.skill(19,+3-8)] => [4,3,4] = 11 vs (14) or less Success! by 3 for 2 FP
Richard: aim full time
GM: Okay.
Mrugnak: aim for the ogres hex.
Mrugnak: +4 to hit
Mrugnak: and it's an explosion, so meh.
GM: If you aim for full, you get Acc+6, and it takes 1 second per 2 points of bonus.
GM: well... 3 seconds actually for you two Heroic Archers.
GM: Eh.
Richard: that's what I want, going for a hex in the middle of warband2
Berkun: sure
GM: Okay, fire when ready. Berkun first, then Richard.
Berkun: so that's 20 +3 +6 +2 +1...
GM: -13 for range, -5 for light, +1 for size.
Berkun: [3d6.skill(20,3+6+2+1+1-13-5)] => [3,2,3] = 8 vs (15) or less Success! by 7
Berkun: aaaand I'm sure I got the ogre
Richard: firing arrow [3d6.skill(18,+4+6+4-5-13)] => [2,2,2] = 6 vs (14) or less Success! by 8
Ogre: Block [3d6.skill(12+2+2)] => [2,1,1] = 4 vs (16) or less Critical Success! [B556]
Ogre: The ogre crouches beneath his shield.
Goblin: Block! [3d6.skill(10,2+1)] => [6,3,6] = 15 vs (13) or less Failure! by 2
Goblin: The goblins don't manage to block it.
Ayake: 6d explosions are good.
Goblin: So... 6d fragmentation damage?
Richard: yes
Ayake: Oy. That's out to 30 yards. @.@
GM: Hits are 7+6-1... 12 hits for 6d6 each.
Richard: happy fun time as long as you're not in it
Richard: [6d6] => [6,6,1,4,1,2] = (20) [6d6] => [3,3,5,6,2,3] = (22) [6d6] => [6,1,2,4,5,6] = (24) [6d6] => [6,3,4,6,2,5] = (26)
Richard: [6d6] => [6,6,6,4,1,2] = (25) [6d6] => [6,1,1,2,4,5] = (19) [6d6] => [1,5,3,1,6,4] = (20) [6d6] => [2,4,1,3,1,4] = (15)
Richard: [6d6] => [3,4,2,5,1,4] = (19) [6d6] => [1,2,4,3,3,5] = (18) [6d6] => [1,1,1,6,3,6] = (18) [6d6] => [5,5,3,5,5,4] = (27)
GM: The central goblins turn into pink mist, but provide cover for everyone else. The other mobs take some shrapnel in the form of the bones of their allies, but are mostly unaffected.
GM: [1d6] => [4] = (4)[1d6] => [4] = (4)[1d6] => [6] = (6)[1d6] => [5] = (5)
Berkun: hwum
Richard: Fast-Draw Arrow [3d6.skill(16,0)] => [3,2,2] = 7 vs (16) or less Success! by 9
GM: The near force immediately begins falling back.
Richard: I can have another one in 3 secs (one to load and two for casting)
GM: Make your rolls.
Ayake: ((Suggestion: Drop it on the hex in the middle of the formation.))
Richard: 6d explode shouting, extra time, -3 FP [3d6.skill(19,+3-8)] => [5,5,4] = 14 vs (14) or less Success! by 0 for 2 FP
Richard: oh, 6 total since I have to aim
GM: Is Berkun doing anything?
Richard: hitting a hex between the archer groups
GM: okay.
Richard: firing arrow [3d6.skill(18,+4+6+4-5-13)] => [2,1,6] = 9 vs (14) or less Success! by 5
Ayake: ((I still have range at about 300 yards.))
GM: The goblins drop to the ground as best they can. I doubt it will help.
GM: Hits are 7-2-1-3+6... 7
GM: So both groups are destroyed.
GM: The other two groups are still standing and are going to catch at least 1 chunk each
GM: [6d6] => [1,4,4,6,1,6] = (22)[6d6] => [3,5,5,4,4,4] = (25)
GM: They'll disperse within a few seconds.
GM: The ogres break and flee in lose order.
** Ayake grins. "See? Goblins." **
Richard: "yah, just hope they don't learn to keep spread out"
GM: ...
GM: just as a note, the spell description limits Explode to 3d.
Mrugnak: Does he have Magery 6?
Richard: doesn't magery 6 allow 6d?
Mrugnak: That's what Magery 6 is for.
Mrugnak: Taking the cap off of stuff.
GM: Okay.
GM: I'll just dig out some sword armor golems and send them at you, muhaha!
Mrugnak: The golem was fun.
** Richard begins to recover strength since his targets have moved farther away and are spread out or dead **
Ayake: "You know, I'm not sure we need to worry about taking cover. Mrugnak, Connell, care for some fun?"
GM: You can recover 1 FP before the second wave is within range.
** Mrugnak looks up from digging dirt out from under his nails. **
** Connell looks up at Ayake, "Rowr?" **
Berkun: Berkun takes aim at an ogre again, cursing silently
Mrugnak: "Doin' summat?"
Ayake: "Berkun, Richard, cover us. Let's advance!"
GM: They're spreading out into a long skirmish line, linking up with the ogres, and moving forward at a trot.
Richard: "OK, I can't do the big ones much though"
Ayake: "That's what we're for."
Berkun: Berkun is going to shoot at the closest ogre after a full aim
GM: Go for it.
Ayake: Ayake is going to head for the goblin line.
** Mrugnak readies his weapons and starts jogging out! **
Ayake: Hopefully Mrugnak and Connell are with him.
GM: Give me a minute to set them up.
Mrugnak: kk
GM: By the way, Berkun and Richard spent 10 seconds fighting, so they spend fatigue.
Ayake: Yeah, I was going to say - set them up, and put us where we are when we hit engagement range?
Berkun: huh
Berkun: okay
Berkun: can I roll for the shot?
GM: Well, Berkun is shooting an ogre.
GM: Yes.
GM: Is Berkun rolling?
GM: How fast are the skirmishers charging?
Ayake: I favor half-move and AoD (Dodge).
Berkun: vitals shot![3d6.skill(20,3+5+2+1+1-13-5-2)] => [6,3,1] = 10 vs (12) or less Success! by 2
Ayake: But it might be difficult to get Mrugnak to do that. >.>
Ogre: Block [3d6.skill(12,2+2)] => [2,2,1] = 5 vs (16) or less Critical Success! by 11 [B556]
Berkun: hmm... luck - let him reroll
Ogre: Block [3d6.skill(12,2+2)] => [2,6,3] = 11 vs (16) or less Success! by 5
Ogre: Block [3d6.skill(12,2+2)] => [3,1,3] = 7 vs (16) or less Success! by 9
Berkun: huh
Berkun: okay
Berkun: didn't see he's got such a high skill with this:)
GM: Closing speed on the PCs, please?
Ayake: 4
GM: You're shooting arrows from 300 yards away - they have time to take All-Out Defense.
GM: And for that matter, Crouch.
GM: So another -2 to hit them.
Berkun: ah, right
GM: Okay, sides will collide in 50 seconds.
GM: Berkun can attack 16 times!
GM: Richard can attack 16 to 8 times, depending on what he's doing.
Berkun: Berkun will take aim at goblins now, but he'll rest a bit first
GM: You can fire as often as you like, up to 16 times.
GM: Do what you want to do.
GM: Richard, Berkun - please indicate your shots and start your attacks.
GM: Range is always more than 200 yards unless you move.
Richard: those the goblin position at the start or end?
GM: Start. I'm not moving them until you've finished killing them.
Richard: heh
Mrugnak: (( Moving with an ALl Out Defense Dodge since Ayake's being so slow. :P ))
Richard: OK, making a macro, sec
GM: You guys don't need to roll fast-draw/fast-load for this sequence.

** Richard will be going after the lighter armored ones, mostly archers at first **
Berkun: was the '5' a critical success too? there's a bonus for targeting a group?
Mrugnak: +4
Goblin: No, I counted that in already.
Mrugnak: for a hex
GM: He can't aim for the vitals and a hex at the same time!
Ayake: Berkun can't target hexes.
Ayake: Hitting the ground doesn't do him any good.
Ayake: Richard, on the other hand...

GM: Uhm.
GM: Who are you aiming at?
Ayake: Warbands west to east in order? Seems simplest.
Richard: archers first, then warbands
Richard: well, to be simple I can just go from east to west, sure
GM: That's fine.
GM: What adjacent hex are you targeting?
Richard: random
Ayake: Call it the northmost hex in front of each band?
Richard: as long as it's not a tree or something
